An Expository Essay Sample For Secondary School Students

An Expository Essay Sample For Secondary School StudentsHaving an expository essay sample to hand for secondary school students can be a useful thing to have. As you've likely learned in elementary and middle school, essays are an important part of the higher-level concepts that they're supposed to teach. Unfortunately, if you didn't, it may seem like you're stuck taking quizzes all day long. Thankfully, an expository essay sample for secondary school students can help you get your essay out in the world before the big exam. Here's how an expository essay sample for secondary school students works. First of all, you'll need to write a brief intro to your essay, which should include some basic information about you and your personal life. This doesn't have to be anything too personal; it just needs to provide the necessary information that's required to start your essay. It's generally a good idea to describe how you learned about your topic and how that learning fits into your persona l life. The first part of your essay should then talk about a particular area of life that you're interested in. You'll want to make sure that your essay will be one that has plenty of detail and that it will be helpful to other people as well. Once you know the general topic you're going to write about, the next part of your essay should be an expository essay sample for secondary school students, which should provide additional information about that topic. Here's what you should include: a summary of the material you've read, a general outline, and some references to further reading or information that will be useful for your reader. In the body of your essay, you'll want to describe the specifics of your topic. You should also try to include some interesting anecdotes or facts about your topic. It's also important to note that when writing an expository essay, your topic must be something that a student can relate to in some way, and that it'll be especially easy for them to explai n what's happening in a person's life when you are talking about their environment. Usually, this is a few years in a person's life. But it should still be something that could happen in the future, so a person should be able to relate it.So what is a good expository essay sample for secondary school students? A great place to start would be an essay about a baseball player. For this example, we'll use Barry Bonds, who plays for the San Francisco Giants. Here's a good example from an expository essay sample for secondary school students that ties in the many drug-related scandals that have rocked baseball for many years. Barry Bonds was accused of using performance-enhancing drugs while he was a professional baseball player. It seemed like a new scandal every day for several years. Ultimately, though, many players and coaches admitted to steroid use, and the entire sport went through a major reform process. There was one moment that I thought summed up the reform and changed the way b aseball was perceived by the public. It was when Barry Bonds was caught. Bonds wasn't the only one - many players were found to have used steroids, but Bonds was the only one who went to jail. The rest of the players who got away with it have been free to do whatever they want to do since then.

Cardio vs. Weight Training free essay sample

Name Teacher Name Class Date Compare and Contrast Essay – Final Draft Weight Training vs. Cardiovascular Activity When we make the decision to go to the gym or start an exercise routine, it is important to identify our goals. Do we want to lose weight, sculpt and tone our body, relieve stress, build stamina, or all of the above? One’s goals will determine the best course of action. Both strength training and cardiovascular exercise offer benefits. I have explained those benefits here: Weight training burns calories more calories than we once believed. Weight training creates a metabolic spike; one’s body continues to burn more calories after the routine is complete. For every three pounds of muscle we build, we will burn an extra 120 calories per day, doing everyday activities. Muscle takes more energy to sustain, by building muscle we are eliminating fat and trimming our physique. Functional strength training involves training the body for daily activities, incorporates balance, strength and agility. We will write a custom essay sample on Cardio vs. Weight Training or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It can also promote health and prevent injuries. In contrast, the repetitive nature of some cardiovascular exercise can cause strain and injury if not supplemented with strength training. Cardiovascular exercise can relieve stress by releasing endorphins and elevating serotonin levels in the brain. Just 15 minutes of cardio several times a week can greatly reduce anxiety. Cardiovascular exercise helps build stamina and reduce fatigue. It also activates the immune system and helps fight off infection. People who do regular cardio exercise are less susceptible to colds and flu. Regular cardio exercise prolongs life, promotes oxygen delivery to the muscles, and improves heart health. Cardiovascular exercise prevents inflammation, raises good cholesterol levels, and reduces the risk of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Though cardio does not burn calories on the same level that strength training does, it still offers plenty of benefit. Both cardiovascular exercise and strength training offer multiple benefits and performing either of them will make one feel great. The best exercise plan should probably incorporate both types of exercise for overall fitness and health. If your overall goal is weight loss, a combination of both cardio and strength training would be most beneficial to you. This is due to the caloric burn you achieve from a cardio routine and the increase in metabolism you receive from the strength training.

The Portrayal of Shakespeares Hamlet in Cinema Essay Example For Students

The Portrayal of Shakespeares Hamlet in Cinema Essay This indecisiveness is apparent again in this quotation from Rothwell (1999) Prince Hamlet as misogynist is but one of the princes multiple masks that include avenger, wit, actor, manager, director, philosopher, murderer, duelist, soldier, courtier, glass of fashion, and almost every other imaginable human trait yet in this movie a good deal of Fitzwilliam Darcys misogyny lurks behind the Hamlet mask. (Kenneth S. Rothwell, 1999, pp. 57) Rothwell believes Hamlet to be an everyman (or everywoman, e. g.Sarah Bernhardt and Asta Nielson) and even manages to match him up to Jane Austens Mr Darcy as played by Laurence Olivier. We will write a custom essay on The Portrayal of Shakespeares Hamlet in Cinema specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Hamlets anger comes through more in this film as in the Branagh film but not so in the Zeffirelli film. Oliviers Hamlet is a very bad-tempered character; he paces around and lets his thoughts run wild (as Mel Gibson described Hamlet an introspective, who thinks too much). In the voices overs of his soliloquies especially in the first you can see how his thoughts are affecting him quite strongly, his mind is in turmoil. There is even some indication that he may have been considering suicide during the to be or not to be soliloquy as we see he is holding a dagger to his abdomen. Olivier chose a surprisingly young actress for his Gertrude, at the time of filming she was more than 10 years his junior despite playing his mother; Eileen Herlie was only twenty-seven when the film was made (Olivier was forty), and she brought with her a decidedly sexy presence. (Anthony B. Dawson, 1995. pp. 181) Anthony B Dawson believes that Eileen Herlie was cast as Gertrude to create a plausible rival to Ophelia for her sons affections. It cannot be denied that there are one or two marginally overenthusiastic kisses but contrary to many critics I do believe that the Olivier film makes less of the oedipal interpretation in the closet scene, though it seems to favour the child-like portrayal of Hamlet. There is little sexual contact with his mother as could be used for the Freudian perception and is so in Zeffirellis film. Olivier prefers more to hug her and at one point lays his head upon her lap as would a child. This contrasts well with the Zeffirelli film, Oliviers Hamlet is not physically violent towards his mother, but this once again may reflect more the views of the time rather than Shakespeares intention. The duel scene contrasts with the Bernhardt film by lasting much longer and the use of camera movement, mainly high angle shots. The duel scene is very stagey; swashbuckling and flashy swordplay, unlike the thrusting broadsword of Zefferillis Hamlet and the structured and controlled fencing of Branaghs. The final scene of this film imitates the first with Hamlets funeral procession up to the highest tower in the castle. Chapter Five Franco Zeffirellis Hamlet, 1990 Zeffirellis film is the only one of the three studied for this essay, which is not directed by the actor playing Hamlet. Zeffirelli cut, rewrote and rearranged much of his Hamlet; he only kept 1242. 5 of Shakespeares original lines. The speech made by Claudius towards Hamlet in the text during his wedding in which he requests Hamlet sees him as a father is moved to the extra added scene of old Hamlets funeral and the get thee to a nunnery speech is moved to the same scene as The Mousetrap. Zeffirellis aim with all of his Shakespeare films was to make Shakespeare accessible and understandable to not only a wider but a younger audience hence his rewriting of some of the language, to make it more comprehensible for a modern audience although it is often thought that he underestimates his audiences intelligence by changing words that really may not have needed changing. Some of the changes indicate that Zeffirelli has a distressingly low estimate of his audiences intelligence. At 3. 2. 49 for instance, stirrups of no kindred becomes stirrups of different families. At 1. 1. 84, Minerva is replaced by goddess. (Ace Pilkington in Davies and Wells, 1994, pp. 168) Zeffirelli was an enthusiastic devotee of Shakespeare. He felt that Shakespeare and his plays should be universally celebrated and everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy them. He chose his actors carefully, feeling that famous actors, especially Hollywood heart-throbs like Mel Gibson, would attract the younger generation. He was right, as we can see from the reference to Mel Gibson as Hamlet in the chick flick, Clueless (1992). Zeffirelli is often criticised for the lavish spectacle of his productions, which are said to distract from the underlying play, but he has undeniably brought Shakespeare to a wider audience (Charles Boyce cited by Ace Pilkington in Davies and Wells, 1994. pp. 164) I believe, Zefferellis Hamlet is slightly less lavish than his past productions. The all star cast and the numerous stunning locations are the only spectacular aspects of this film, rather than the beautiful costumes or adorable but unknown actors (Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey) used in Romeo and Juliet. I do not believe that this lavishness will detract from the play, because adding visual interest can often attract more attention, as many young people are very visually orientated and in film the visual element lends itself to be easier to understand, it becomes self-explanatory. Zeffirellis Hamlet unlike his other films was not filmed in Italy. .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b , .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b .postImageUrl , .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b , .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b:hover , .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b:visited , .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b:active { border:0!important; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b:active , .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc2fad0b9fca4924800649a8392fa5d2b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Compare and Contrast The Characters of Romeo and JulietIt was actually filmed at various locations around the UK, including Dover castle in Kent, Aberdeen and several other castles, mainly in Scotland. I believe Scotland was chosen to create a setting with the typical Scandinavian weather but may have been cheaper than to film on location at Elsinore itself. Both Zeffirellis previous films The Taming of the Shrew and Romeo and Juliet had been set and filmed in Italy. The filming of Hamlet challenged Zeffirelli and took him out of his comfort zone by being set in Denmark and filmed mainly in Scotland; He is simply not as much at home in Elsinore as he was in Padua or Verona. (Robert Hapgood in Boose and Burt, 1997. pp. 89) Zeffirelli is Italian and uses his knowledge and love of Italy in his first two films. This is virtually impossible for his Hamlet. Zeffirelli was not familiar with Denmark. Scandinavians like Hamlet are very affected by their location. Northern Europeans are plagued by depression and seasonal affective disorder because of their cold, dark, wintery climate and this is shown in Hamlets character. Zeffirelli, as an Italian, may not completely understand this aspect of Hamlet as these disorders are much less common in Southern Europe where it is warm and bright. Like Branaghs Hamlet, Zefferellis is filmed in colour but it still retains the element of darkness like Oliviers. Zeffirelli was strongly influenced by Oliviers Hamlet he is said to have renounced all other films of Hamlet between 1948 and 1990. Zeffirelli referred to Oliviers Hamlet so much that Mel Gibson was offered Oliviers actual shirt worn in the previous 1948 film of Hamlet; A further example of the impact of the Olivier version comes from Glenn Close in the short HBO film The Making of Hamlet The first day of shooting he was given by one of the producers the actual shirt that Olivier wore in his famous Hamlet, And Gibson tells of making sure that I was in the hotel room by myself, with the lights out and I tried this shirt on. Gradually I got the courage to turn the lights on and I found that it was probably a little too small, but it fit well enough (Ace Pilkington in Davies and Wells, 1994, pp. 166) The film opens with a mix of high and low angle shots upon a crowd of traditionally black clad mourners and solemn knights leading into the crypt where Hamlets father is laid to rest. The scene is dark with the only lights on the faces of Claudius, Gertrude and Hamlet. Gertrudes love for Claudius is more demonstrative in this film. In others it is not obvious and there has been much debate over Gertrudes reasons for marrying Claudius; she may have just wanted to keep her own status and her son in line for the throne. Much more affection between the couple is shown in this film. The ghost in Zeffirellis Hamlet is very different. It comes away from the text by not wearing armour as is stated in the text although this line and the whole scene in which it features has in fact been cut. Also to those who do not know the story, it may not be clear that he is a ghost and he looks very solid and human compared to those in Oliviers and Branaghs films, if a little pallid and unwell. There is nothing obvious to confirm the supernatural nature of the scene, no special effects; Hamlet could be talking to any other character had the text not stated that he is a ghost. Also Hamlets reaction to his father seems more emotional in Zeffirellis film; shock, grief, disbelief, emotional terror, as a son may react to seeing the ghost of his deceased father. Contrary to the other two films, Zeffirelli readily, almost enthusiastically, takes up the oedipal interpretation of Hamlet. It is very obvious in the closet scene where Hamlet all but rapes his mother. The childlike interpretation is also apparent in other scenes. He starts carelessly waving his sword around in rage, he mocks Polonius in the madness scene and when he is killed. Hamlet openly flirts with Ophelia while professing he doesnt love her, he also becomes tearful at various moments during the play. Ophelia is played by 24 year old Helena Bonham-Carter, her own innocence does not seem so genuine in this film, through her facial expressions, her comments and her unusual behaviour towards Banardo when she goes mad. This is as if she has already had some sort of sexual awakening and is returning his flirting in a slightly more meaningful way. .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 , .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 .postImageUrl , .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 , .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65:hover , .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65:visited , .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65:active { border:0!important; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65:active , .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65 .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u00c06a1b23990a18e6da6a3921df9c65:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Hamlet: Growing Pains EssayIn this film much eavesdropping goes on; he witnesses the scene between Polonius and Ophelia when Polonius tells Ophelia to not be so freely accepting of Hamlets tokens. This may be a reason for going to Ophelia first with his pretend insanity because he knew she would tell her father. As it happens Ophelia does not need to tell him because Polonius is shown to witness this scene also. Hamlets madness is less angry in this film and more comical; he laughs and makes the audience laugh. He mocks Polonius while reading and being questioned. He wears Poloniuss cap after killing him and comes out with some of the strangest comments to his uncle. Hamlets brief comical and flirtatious moments in the film contrast with the almost permanently angry or gloomy Hamlet played by Olivier and Branagh. The fate of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is shown in this film, because the text that would usually indicate what happened to them is cut. We are shown Hamlet switching the letters but are only told by voice over what is said in the original letter. The acting style of our Hamlets between the films is incredibly different. Mel Gibson is not a stage actor, although he has had experience on stage, he is famous for films; his acting is a more realistic presentation. He plays Hamlet as if he is Hamlet, he is this seriously disturbed, grieving young man whereas Branagh and Olivier are both more stage orientated and play Hamlet more as the usual larger than life Shakespearean character paying indirect homage to the writer rather than the story and character itself. Mel Gibson was chosen for the role of Hamlet after Zeffirelli saw him playing the character of depressed Sergeant Martin Gibbs in Lethal Weapon; Zeffirellis sudden inspiration as he watched Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon, that here was a young actor who could play a new kind of Hamlet had paid off in a return to the roots of Shakespeares play the revenge tragedy and Hamlet as a thriller. (Ace Pilkington in Davies and Wells, 1994, pp. 174) Mel Gibson is probably our youngest Hamlet at thirty-four, Glenn Close, who plays Gertrude, was forty-three and his Ophelia is twenty-four. Olivier was forty when he played Hamlet opposite his twenty-seven year old Gertrude and eighteen year old Ophelia, both of whom are considerably young compared to the other actresses. Branagh was thirty-six in his film of Hamlet, Gertrude play by Julie Christie was fifty-seven a seemingly more appropriate age for Gertrude and Kate Winslets Ophelia was twenty-one. There is a reference to Hamlets age in the gravedigger scene, when we are told how long Hamlets childhood friend Yorick has been in the ground making early thirties a very feasible age for Hamlet. The indecisiveness of Oliviers Hamlet is almost non-existent in Zeffirellis film, though this does not make him a more understandable character. Zefferellis Hamlet is impulsive, he does not think about his actions until afterwards, if he thinks about them at all. Gibsons prince is not weighed down by conscience, which means in Elizabethan usage thoughtfulness rather than moral scruples or what today might be called guilt. (Kenneth S. Rothwell, 1999, pp. 132) He is a spur-of-the-moment prince, as mentioned before he waves his sword around like a child in anger. He does not think twice about plunging his sword through the arras in Gertrudes chamber not knowing who is behind it. He does not think how his actions are affecting the people around him Ophelia most of all is upset by his behaviour and the murder of her father tips her over the edge. Hes a very careless person and his desire for revenge is insatiable and selfish. Chapter Six Kenneth Branaghs Hamlet, 1996 Kenneth Branagh has performed and directed many stage productions of Shakespeare between 1987 and 2002, he played Hamlet on stage in 1988 directed by Derek Jacobi who himself played Hamlet in the BBC Shakespeare series and in turn plays Claudius in Branaghs film. The Branagh film is the full text. Nothing has been cut. Branagh struggled to obtain finance for his full length Hamlet because too many film companies did not believe that a full length Shakespeare, and of all things Hamlet, would be practical for a late 20th Century audience. The perpetual reluctance of film companies to finance Shakespeare had frustrated each attempt (Branagh cited by Mark J. Casselo, 2004) It is not difficult to see why film companies thought that. Youngsters and even some adults today are not interested in Shakespeare; the enjoyment is crushed out of them before they even leave school from being forced to study it. They maybe happy to watch a severely cut version but a four hour version of a play they do not know or like and barely understand, is hardly going to be box office blockbuster.

Knights Templar, the Famous Crusading Order

Knights Templar, the Famous Crusading Order The Knights Templar were also known as Templars, Templar Knights, Poor Knights of Solomons Temple, Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon,  and Knights of the Temple. Their motto was Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto Thy Name be the Glory, from Psalm 115. The Origin of the Templars The route traveled by pilgrims from Europe to the Holy Land was in need of policing. In 1118 or 1119, not long after the success of the First Crusade, Hugh de Payns and eight other knights offered their services to the patriarch of Jerusalem for just this purpose. They took vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, followed the Augustinian rule, and patrolled the pilgrim route to aid and defend pious travelers. King Baldwin II of Jerusalem gave the knights quarters in a wing of the royal palace that had been part of the Jewish Temple; from this they got the names Templar and Knights of the Temple. The Official Establishment of the Knights Templar For the first decade of their existence, the Knights Templar were few in number. Not many fighting men were willing to take the Templar vows. Then, thanks largely to the efforts of Cistercian monk Bernard of Clairvaux, the fledgling order was given papal recognition at the Council of Troyes in 1128. They also received a specific rule for their order (one clearly influenced by the Cistercians). Templar Expansion Bernard of Clairvaux wrote an extensive treatise, In Praise of the New Knighthood, that raised awareness of the order, and the Templars grew in popularity. In 1139 Pope Innocent II placed the Templars directly under papal authority, and they were no longer subject to any bishop in whose diocese they might hold property. As a result they were able to establish themselves in numerous locations. At the height of their power they had about 20,000 members, and they garrisoned every town of any considerable size in the Holy Land. Templar Organization The Templars were led by a Grand Master; his deputy was the Seneschal. Next came the Marshal, who was responsible for individual commanders, horses, arms, equipment, and ordering supplies. He usually carried the standard, or specifically directed a specially-appointed standard-bearer. The Commander of the Kingdom of Jerusalem was the treasurer and shared a certain authority with the Grand Master, balancing his power; other cities also had Commanders with specific regional responsibilities. The Draper issued clothes and bed linen and monitored the brothers appearance to keep them living simply. Other ranks formed to supplement the above, depending on the region. The bulk of the fighting force was made up of knights and sergeants. Knights were the most prestigious; they wore the white mantle and red cross, carried knightly weapons, rode horses and had the services of a squire. They usually came from the nobility. Sergeants filled other roles as well as engaging in battle, such as blacksmith or mason. There were also squires, who were originally hired out but later allowed to join the order; they performed the essential job of caring for the horses. Money and the Templars Though individual members took vows of poverty, and their personal possessions were limited to the essentials, the order itself received donations of money, land and other valuables from the pious and the grateful. The Templar organization grew very wealthy. In addition, the military strength of the Templars made it possible to collect, store, and transport bullion to and from Europe and the Holy Land with a measure of safety. Kings, noblemen, and pilgrims used the organization as a kind of bank. The concepts of safe deposit and travelers checks originated in these activities. The Downfall of the Templars In 1291, Acre, the last remaining Crusader stronghold in the Holy Land, fell to the Muslims, and the Templars no longer had a purpose there. Then, in 1304, rumors of irreligious practices and blasphemies committed during secret Templar initiation rites began to circulate. Very likely false, they nevertheless gave King Philip IV of France grounds to arrest every Templar in France on Oct. 13, 1307. He had many tortured to make them confess to charges of heresy and immorality. It is generally believed that Philip did this simply to take their vast wealth, though he may also have feared their growing power. Philip had previously been instrumental in getting a Frenchman elected pope, but it still took some maneuvering to convince Clement V to order all Templars in all countries arrested. Eventually, in 1312, Clement suppressed the order; numerous Templars were executed or imprisoned, and the Templar property that wasnt confiscated was transferred to the Hospitallers. In 1314 Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Templar Knights, was burned at the stake.

List of Naturally Occurring Elements

List of Naturally Occurring Elements Some elements have been made by man, but do not exist naturally. Have you ever wondered how many elements are found in nature? Of the 118 elements that have been discovered, there are 90 elements that occur in nature in appreciable amounts. Depending who you ask, there are another 4 or 8 elements that occur in nature as a result of radioactive decay of heavier elements. So, the grand total of natural elements is 94 or 98. As new decay schemes are discovered, its likely the number of natural elements will grow. However, these elements will likely be present in trace amounts. There are 80 elements that have at least one stable isotope. The other 38 elements exist only as radioactive isotopes. Several of the radioisotopes instantly decay into a different element. It used to be believed that of the first 92 elements on the periodic table  (1 is hydrogen and 92 is uranium) that 90 elements occur naturally. What is Confucius' concept of good government and the ideal state Essay

What is Confucius' concept of good government and the ideal state - Essay Example It mainly aimed at assisting leaders maintain local order, keep tradition, and maintaining a steady living standard for peasants. Those who adhered to this school got training in loyalty, traditional rituals, and generosity 1(Bell, 2008). In addition, the school taught respect for the old and superiors. Confucius honored the ancient ways of life, which he encouraged his students to master. For example, he urged them to read the Book of Documents as well as the Book of changes. His philosophy included embracing Chinese values, which included proper performance of traditional rituals 1(Bell, 2008). Confucius proposed that proper governance could be established by embracing virtue and benevolence. He emphasized that the leader had to be good; this way, people would follow what is right. Therefore, he taught that leaders should be excellent examples to the subjects to enhance the creating of a true empire. The Confucius concept advanced that all the posts in the government had to be 1based on righteousness and virtue. As a result, the ruled class, seeing their leaders as upright and benevolent, would also become upright. Therefore, this concept states that an ideal state should have leaders whose virtues can be emulated by those they rule. 2(Bell, 2008) In his book, Bell argues that the Confucius concept of good governance and the ideal state has three essential doctrines. The first doctrine of this concept is benevolence, which Confucius regarded as something people have to cultivate in themselves. Enlightened self interest plays a key role in approaching benevolence. For governance to succeed, leaders have to put themselves in the position of those they rule. State leaders should treat other people accordingly. To this concept, benevolence entails doing unto others what one would like them to do to him or herself. Thus, this concept places emphasis on the need for benevolence and treating

The law of media publicity contempt is obviously broken. The problem Essay

The law of media publicity contempt is obviously broken. The problem is that there is no better system that might reasonably su - Essay Example A strict implementation of prohibition laws such as the 1987 Act tend to clash, however, with certain basic human rights such as freedom of the press and the right to information. On top of this, advances in communication technology and the advent of globalisation make it doubly hard for authorities to fully impose sanctions on recalcitrant press and bloggers. Nonetheless, it would be wrong to say that the UK law on media publicity contempt is totally broken and that there is nothing that can be done about it. On the contrary, the UK media publicity contempt system has proven to be comparatively effective than those of other jurisdictions and the present state of the law presents a more mature approach in balancing between freedoms and obligations. State of the Law Media Publicity Contempt English media publicity contempt is governed primarily by the Contempt of Court Act 1981. It is a strict liability rule that does not take into consideration intent as an element in finding a verdi ct of guilt or absence of it and applies to publications, which include speech, writing and all other form of communications, addressed to the public. The strict liability rule applies only in the following cases: when publications create substantial risk in the obstruction or prejudice of judicial proceedings, and; the proceedings are active, as defined in Schedule 1 of said law. Schedule 1 describes an active proceeding, whether criminal or appellate, as the period from the time of a proceeding’s initial steps to the time of its conclusion, with initial steps including the arrest of the accused without warrant, the issuance of a warrant of arrest, the issuance of summons, the service of indictment or similar documents or oral charge. The conclusion stage of a proceeding includes the acquittal or any other verdict, which ends the proceeding or the discontinuance of the proceeding or by operation of law.1 The British law on media publicity contempt arose out of the 1820 case of R v Clement 2 where the Observer newspaper was fined ?500 for featuring a series of report on an ongoing trial. The case involved the trials of Cato Street conspirators who were then charged of treason for conspiring to kill members of the British Cabinet. The Observer was faithfully detailing the trials to the chagrin of the Government who was trying to conceal its substantive and procedural lapses. The newspaper’s editor was charged and tried in absentia for contempt for disregarding a court gag order. His subsequent appeal, which was also heard by almost the same judges who decided against him in the lower court contrary to the principle of natural justice, was dismissed.3 Since 1931, however, a â€Å"scandalising the court† case, or a case where the charge involves bringing down the authority of the judge or court through an act or publication, has not been successful in this jurisdiction.4 The 1981 Act came about as a result of the European Court of Human Right s (ECHR) decision in the case of The Sunday Times v United Kingdom5 where the newspaper featured a series of reports about the drug thalidomide that caused women to give birth to deformed babies during the pendency of the negotiations of settlement between

miscarriages of justice Essays -- essays research papers

The statement "It is better that 10 guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer" summarises and highlights the mistakes and injustices in the criminal justice system. In a just society, the innocent would never be charged, nor convicted, and the guilty would always be caught and punished. Unfortunately, it seems this would be impossible to achieve due to the society in which we live. Therefore, miscarriages of justice occur in the criminal justice system more frequently than is publicised or known to the public at large. They are routine and would have to be considered as a serious problem in our society. The law is what most people respect and abide by, if society cannot trust the law that governs them, then there will be serious consequences including the possible breakdown of that society. In order to have a fair and just society, miscarriages of justice must not only become exceptional but ideally cease to occur altogether. A miscarriage of justice is basically "a failure to attain the desired end result of justice". In our society, every person should be treated equally and fairly as "our legal institutions are premised on the idea that our legal system is both neutral and impartial, and that all persons are equal in the eyes of the law". The country in which we were born, the language we speak, the colour of our skin and our gender should be of no relevance in deciding the outcome of justice. All these notions are part of "due process" and if this occurs in our society, why are there still miscarriages of justice? Our legal system is based on the fact that everyone deserves a fair hearing. In theory this is ideal, but due to human nature mistakes will always occur. The introduction of DNA into the courtroom ( which can free innocent people wrongfully convicted of a crime twenty years ago) and Anderson's view on allowing juries to ask questions and participate more in tria ls (by stating the evidence on which they base their convictions), on the surface appear beneficial to the outcome of justice, and in some cases this will be the result. However, justice will always be hindered by humans and their corrupt side. Unfortunately, this is part of human nature and even the people in high positions are not immune. When a person is accused of being "guilty", society must assume the person is innocen... ...ct that in less serious crimes the defendant will plead guilty in order to receive a better deal. The theories of Anderson, Hogg,Walker and Wilson are justified opinions and could be advantageous to the criminal justice system. However, even if these theories are implemented into our society, corruption will still always occur. Unfortunately, it is just part of human nature. It is futile to establish new methods of judgement without considering the fact that corruption occurs throughout all levels of society. Juries, police, and lawyers can all be persuaded and succumb to corruption if it suits their needs to do so. Likewise, DNA samples can be tampered with or plagued by human error. It is a vicious circle and until human beings change, miscarriages will continue to occur. Miscarriages of justice are definitely not exceptional and occur much more frequently than most people realise. They place a great burden on our society as a whole and cause injustices and hardships to many people. Just because we do not hear about them, does not mean they don't exist. As Walker states "s ince justice is applied by fallible, prejudiced human beings, miscarriages are inevitable".

What Weapons and Transportation Machines Were Improved the Most Between World War One and World War Two?

What Weapons and Transportation Machines were Improved the Most between World War One and World War Two? During World War One, tanks, guns, chemical weapons, bombs, airplanes, ships, submarines and grenades were used to kill. A lot of these weapons and machines were difficult to use, really easy to destroy, too heavy, didn't last too long, not accurate enough, and didn't shoot too far. The weapons and Transportation machines were improved in World War Two to make it easier to kill; therefore soldiers would kill more of the enemies. Also, if the machines were too easy to destroy, they improved them or eliminated them. New technologies were invented after World War One because the soldiers realized that they needed better strategies to kill the enemies without themselves getting injured and killed. Some of those technologies were used for defensive purposes as well. For example, the radar was a new technology that was used to identify where the enemies are so they could kill them, and the radar was used to identify when the enemies were attacking so that they could defend ahead of time. Transportation machines such as airplanes, tanks, submarines, ships, and weapons such as different types of guns were improved in World War Two. Airplanes, tanks, submarines, and ships used in World War One were improved for World War Two. Airplanes in World War One didn’t have as much technology as in World War Two and couldn’t fly a long distance in a short amount of time like the planes from World War Two used to fly. Airplanes in World War Two had more space for bombs on board and they had radars. Tanks in World War Two had more weight than in World War One, meaning that they had more metal on them so bullets wouldn’t damage the tanks easily. In World War One war most tanks would have a range of 25 miles[1], while in World War Two a tank could reach the range of 400km[2], which is 248. 5 miles. The armor inside the tank also increased, that’s why the tanks got heavier in World War Two. Submarines had more deck guns in World War Two because more guns were invented during World War Two[3]. The Radar was invented after World War One and before World War Two; therefore they installed the radar in the submarines for World War Two. The Submarines in World War Two had air conditioning and new battery-powered engines, which was not used in World War One either[4]. The ships in World War One didn’t have radars because the radar was invented after World War One. Ships in World War Two had the radars installed, got their speed increased, and the cannon range increased as well. The usage of machine guns in World War One brought new ideas to built better models of machine guns and submachine guns in World War Two. MP40 is a submachine gun that was produced from 1940 to 1945. The MP40 is an automatic gun, and it’s really accurate. Its effective range is 100 meters, and its rate of fire is 550 rounds per minute. 5] Another model of a commonly used submachine gun is the Thompson. This submachine gun was produced in 1921. The Thompson is an automatic gun as well. It is very accurate, and the fire rate is very high: 800-850 rounds per minute. Its effective range is 50 meters. [6] A very commonly used and successful machine gun is the SG-43, which was in service from 1943-1968. This machine gun was gas operated, and it wa s automatic. The machine guns in World War One were not gas operated and didn’t have the rate of fire that the machine guns from World War Two have. The rate of fire from the SG-43, which was used in World War Two, is 500-700 rounds per minute,[7] while a machine gun from World War One would only fire 400-600 small-calibre rounds per minute. [8] The performance of the rifles in World War One was really poor; therefore they improved some rifles and even made new models for World War Two. Rifles in World War One would usually fire only 15 rounds per minute. Their range was about 1,400 meters, but the accuracy could only be guaranteed at around 600 meters. [9] Before World War Two, the performance of the rifles was improved and new Rifles were created. The STG-44 was a gas-operated assault rifle that was developed during World War Two in 1942. Its effective range is 300 meters, but its fire rate was 500-600 rounds per minute. [10] The Karabiner 98k is a bolt-action rifle that was produced from 1935-1945. Its effective range with iron sights is 500 meters, and over 800 meters with optics. [11] The M1 Garand is a gas-operated semi-automatic rifle that was produced from 1936-1957. Its effective range was 402 meters. [12] All weapons and transportation machines such as airplanes, tanks, submarines, nd ships that were used in World War One had a poor performance; therefore they were improved before and during World War Two.
